So as one of my first real critical blogs on this site i’m going to tackle a debate thats actually pretty relevant to today’s video production professionals. Though I won’t offer any groundbreaking evidence or revelations I do offer pretty extensive experience with both PC’s and Mac’s so i’m going to share my thoughts with you!
lets take it from the start. I’ve been computer literate for most of my life, fortunately my father worked in the technology industry and needed a computer at home for work. Our first computer was a giant HP desktop computer with like a 500mb hard drive and a 14.4 dialup modem. I thought this was incredible and set out to learn everything I could about it.
Fast forward to today. having used a PC for a good portion of my life I was introuduced to Mac’s in college. Needless to say it changed my life and now I own two Mac’s and an iPhone…i’m kind of Mac crazy!
so here is what i’ve found. PC’s work ok for office related tasks (word processing, spreadsheets, powerpoints, etc.) and Mac’s dominate on creative related tasks (audio recording, video editing, graphic design, etc.). Anyone who edits video can’t deny the power of Final Cut. After using Adobe Premiere for PC for a while I was able to switch over to Final Cut and I will NEVER go back! Adobe Premiere is OK. It just doesn’t hold much ground compared to Final Cut. It’s slower and it isn’t layed out as well as Final Cut and you don’t have as much control over the video as you do with Final Cut!
I know there will be the people who claim Mac’s are too expensive for the average person to own. Well their slightly misinformed. I own a Mac mini with 2gb ram a dual layer DVD burner and tons of other great features. This set me back $599 (without a monitor) and you can get a copy of Final Cut Express for $199. Final cut express will accomplish pretty much all of your editing needs (the only major thing it lacks is Compressor). So for under $1,000 you can have a very powerful Mac editing rig. Compare that to a PC equivalent for under $1,000 with a copy of adobe premiere elements (the lite version of adobe premiere) for $99 and its not really a comparison!
My final little bit of information comes from a Mac commercial. Its the one with the girl who is looking for a PC but ulitmately chooses a Mac. At one point she says “I just want a computer that works all the time without viruses and bugs” or something like that. It’s so true, Mac’s just WORK. I’ve had my Macbook for 5 years and it works just as good as it did the day I got it (all i’ve had to do is replace the battery once)
Hope this helps! until next time!!
